Feliz ano novo. Dois mil e oito passou. Acabou. Foi um ano bastante interessante já que boa parte dele passei na Austrália. Em março de 2008 cheguei em Perth e desde então por aqui fiquei. Já são mais de 10 meses. Como passou rápido. Mas chega desse papo clichê.

Estou escrevendo basicamente por 2 motivos – primeiro, as fotos; segundo, dizer como foi passar a virada longe de “amigos”. Como vocês podem ver pelas fotos acima [e pelas no Picasa], os fogos na Harbour Bridge foram irados. O fato interessante é que existem duas queimas. A primeira, às 21h; a segunda, à meia-noite. A primeira queima é para as famílias. Assim, aqueles com filhos pequenos podem assistir à queima e voltar pra casa sem passar pela muvuca que pegamos. É uma excelente idéia.

Contudo, a queima das 21h é bem fraquinha. Simplesmente porque nada acontece na ponte. É possível ver fogos em vários pontos do porto – que são muito bonitos também, mas não chegam aos pés da queima “verdadeira”. À meia-noite, há fogos saindo de tudo quanto é lado. Há basicamente 7 pontos de queima na região da Harbour Bridge. Portanto, apesar da muvuca, dá pra ver bastante coisa.

Seguindo pro segundo motivo deste texto, essa foi uma virada especial, pois foi fora do Brasil. Longe dos amigos tradicionais. Não que tenha sido chata. Pelo contrário, foi bem divertida. Durante as 11h incessáveis horas de espera, a nossa turminha composta por basicamente 5 brasileiros e uma chinesa se divertiu de todos os modos. Cantamos e jogamos até ficarmos enjoados. Se tivesse espaço, acho que até rolava um “Corre cotia”.

É isso aí. Virada de ano internacional. Em Sydney, Austrália. Adeus ano velho, feliz 2009.

Happy New Year. 2008 is gone. It’s over. That was an especial year, as it was spent in Australia. I arrived last year in mid March and have stayed so far. It’s been ten months! Ge… time flies!

The reasons I’m writing this post are two. First, the photos. Second, to say how it is to stay away from your friends on New Year’s Eve. As you can see by the photos, the fireworks at the Harbour Bridge were excellent. It’s fair to say that there are two fireworks. The first happens at 9pm for the families. Therefore, parents can bring their children, watch the fireworks, and come back home in peace. It is a very nice idea.

However, I’d say the 9pm Fireworks is not worthwhile, as nothing happens at the bridge. There are many fireworks spots at the harbour – which are awesome – but they can’t be compared to the real thing at 12am. During the second event, fireworks keep coming from 6 different spots and the bridge is on fire, which also offers the best fire show.

Moving on to the second reason of this post, it’s a bit weird to be away from very good friends on NYE. It was good though. There were five Brazilians and one Chinese. So we had a group big enough to sing and play funny games and spend the 11 hours waiting for the show. We didn’t play “Corre cotia” (a Brazilian game) for lack of room. Yeah, it was packed there.

Natal fora de casa, fora do Brasil. Primeira vez, hein. É legal e estranho ao mesmo tempo. Legal porque é diferente, novo. Estranho porque não estou com a minha família e Natal sempre é tempo pra família, né. Contudo, não dá pra dizer que foi completamente longe da família, já que acabei passando o Natal com uma galera do Brasil. Fui para na casa de amigos de amigos. Coisa de brasileiro.

Devo dizer que valeu a pena. Pela primeira vez, depois de tantos meses, me senti “meio em casa”. Além de ouvir tanta gente falando português, tinha ceia brasileira. Já da pra imaginar a cena, não? Tinha peru, farofa, arroz solto, salada e bebidas. Bem brasileiro mesmo. Levei dois amigos coreanos que acabaram gostando bastante também.

Feliz Natal, galera. Ho ho ho!

Overseas Xmas for the very first time. It’s kinda cool and weird at the same time. It’s cool because it’s different, new. But also weird because I’m away from my family and Xmas is traditionaly a time to spend with family. However, I couldn’t say this Xmas was totally away from family as I spent it with Brazilians. Friends of friends from Brazil. Very typical.

I have to say that it was worthwhile. After months in Australia, I felt like I was “home”. There were heaps of people speaking Portuguese and moreover we had a Brazilian supper. Brazilians can get the picture. Turkey, farofa (this is Brazilian food), Brazilian rice, salad and beverages. Very Brazilian. I also brought two friends from Korea who loved it!

Dias corridos

Desde que chegamos em Sydney, não paramos um dia sequer pra ficar sem fazer nada. Logo na primeira manhã, fomos pra Opera House, Darling Harbour e Harbour Bridge. Fatalmente, já de noite, tivemos a impressão de que tínhamos praticamente esgotado o melhor de Sydney em apenas um dia.

Isso é uma grande mentira. Tem mais coisas pra se fazer por aqui do que a gente pensa. Ainda havia vários outros lugares pra gente ir como The Rocks, os museus, os parques e praias mais desconhecidas. Estamos há mais de 2 semanas por aqui e posso dizer que ainda há o que ser descoberto.

Nos últimos dias, descobrimos alguns lugares mais distantes como Palm Beach e Cronulla. Fomos pra Cronulla na quinta-feira e de quebra passamos no Royal National Park. Foi bem massa. Bondi que me perdõe, mas as outras praias [especialmente Manly] são bem melhores. Um amigo meu disse que “Bondi só tem nome mesmo”. E concordo com ele.

Tou tentando organizar as coisas por aqui pra postar de modo ordenado [ou não], mas tá difícil. Não encontro muito tempo, especialmente, paciência pra isso. Por enquanto, fica o meu comentário sobre o Xmas Spec da Hillsong. Assistimos hoje e valeu a pena. Cinco doletas bem investidas. A produção é realmente impressionante e a galera que canta é superafinada. Fico a imaginar como deve ser a conferência que rola todo ano em Julho. Deve ser ainda muito melhor.

Since we stepped in Sydney, we haven’t stopped. At the very first morning we went to the Opera House, Darling Harbour, and Harbour Bridge. Therefore, at night we had the impression that we had seen everything in one day only.

However, it’s a lie. There’s much more to be seen here. Some spots such as the Rocks, museums, parks, and beaches need to be visited. We’ve been here for 2 weeks and there’s still more things to be discovered.

In the last days, we went to two beaches – Palm Beach and Cronulla Beach. We went to Cronulla last Thursday and we passed by the Royal National Park. It was awesome. And I have to say that Bondi is nothing compared to other beaches in Sydney. Manly for instance is much better. A friend of mine says that “Bondi has got a reputation and just that.” And I agree with him.

I’m still organizing my photos here and trying to keep writing to you guys. It’s been quite hard, for I don’t have time, especially patience, for it. For now, I wanna say that the Xmas Spec at Hillsong was beautiful. The whole thing was awesome – the songs, the dances, everything. I’m thinking of the Conference that happens every July. It must be even better.

Fomos dar uma esquiada dias atrás. Vcs podem ver pela terceira foto que o sr. aqui não é o melhor patinador da turma. haha. Devo dizer que caí uma vez só, mas foi suficiente. Dá pra ficar com a perna bem roxa.

O Mark, amigo da Coréia, e a Érica vieram comigo e encontramos o pessoal da Open Door Church que nos levaram até o rinque de patinação. Foi bem massa.

We went ice skating last friday night. As you can observe by the third photo, I’m definetly not the best ice skater. I fell over only once, but it was enough to make me a bruise.

Mark, a friend from Korea, and Erica came along and we met our friends from the Open Door Church, who brought us to the rink. It was awesome.

Compramos os ingressos pra participar do Hillsong Christmas Spectacular. Parece que vai ser bemmmm legal. Várias coisas pra ver e tal. Bom também que é baratim. Cinco doletas.

Hey. Xmas is coming. This year it’s gonna be a bit different if compared to any Xmas I ever had. Firstly, it won’t be in Brazil. And secondly it will be in the Hillsong Church. We bought the tickets this afternoon for the Hillsong Christmas Spectacular. It’s gonna be great! We’ll have heaps of things to watch. And it’s quite cheap — 5 bucks.

Aê, magavilha, hein? 3 dias em Sydney. Há quem diga que não tem muito o que se fazer por aqui. Mas devo dizer que té que tem coisas pra se ver por aqui. Hoje mesmo fui dar um rolê no centro. Caraca… tudo aqui é gigante. Os prédio e tal. Tudo alto e suntuoso. Nos dias anteriores visitei alguns lugares legais como o Darling Harbour e a Opera House [acima]. Também conheci um pessoal da Coréia. Demos uma volta pelo centro e fomos jogar sinuca mais à noite. Da hora.

Cool, uh? Three days in Sydney. Some say there’s no much to do here. I’d say there’s some stuff to see here. Today I went to the city. And everything looks so… big. Skyscrapers and so on. Everything is high and fashionable. In the first two days, I went to some places like Darling Harbour and the Opera House. I also met some guys from Korea. We went for a walk in the city and played pool at night. Cool.

Universidade de Western Australia. Taê. Legal, né? Se não me engano, a universidade mais antiga de WA. Os prédios têm esse estilo mais antigo, europeu. E são bonitos assim como na foto só por fora mesmo. Se vc acha que por dentro são velhos, acertou. Na Curtin é bem-mais-melhor-de-bom! Hehe.

Mas o que a Curtin não tem é essa vista maravilhosa da Matilda Bay, que fica colada à UWA. De lá, tem-se essa vista péssima de Perth city [da qual devo dizer sinto muitas saudades]. Vou explicar: o centro de Perth é pequeno, sim, mas ajeitado, charmoso, aconchegante. Aqui em Sydney é tudo muito suntuoso e surreal pro meu gosto. Enfim…

Sempre mudo de assunto. Voltando pra UWA, se vc quiser vir e fazer pesquisa, esse é o lugar, merrrrmão. Se tu curte “business”, vai pra Curtin. ECU, Murdoch e Notre Dame? Não sei!

University of Western Australia. Cool, uh? I reckon it’s the oldest in WA. The buildings have this old european style. And they look good just from outside. If you think they are old inside, you’re right. Curtin is much better…

However, Curtin can’t offer this terrible view [above]. It’s from Matilda Bay, closeby UWA. From there, Perth city can bee seen. And I have to say that I really miss Perth. Even tough it’s tiny, it’s homelike, cozy, warm.

Now… if u wanna do research, UWA is the place to come. If business, Curtin. And don’t have any idea about other universities such as ECU, Murdoch and Notre Dame.
